Hair Treatments You Should Be Using, According to Stylists

There’s nothing worse than a bad hair day, but sun exposure, chlorine, saltwater, and sweat can make it hard to avoid. That’s why we asked professionals to share their fave hair treatments (from preserving color-treated hair to repairing damage) that will turn every bad hair day into a good one.

Tame frizz
Michelle Blaisure, Bosley Professional Strength’s certified trichologist and product and technical specialist, recommends, “the Bosley Professional Strength Rebalancing and Finishing Treatment, which is a triple-powered oil product containing marula oil, burdock root extract, and argan oil that helps to support a healthy scalp, smooth frizzy hair, and create shine.”

For those extra humid days, we also love the Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream because it totally eliminates frizz while also smoothing and conditioning your locks.

Protect your color
Color-treated hair needs both protein and moisture. “I would recommend Nexxus masks. They’re great for restoring what is lost during the coloring process, especially the bleaching process. For bleached hair, in particular, Olaplex products are great,” says T3 lead celebrity stylist Laura Polko.

Sally Hershberger senior colorist Nikki Ferrara further recommends, “the Wella Professionals Color Post Service, which balances the PH of your hair and brings it back to a nice shiny and healthier look.” She suggests using this treatment in between appointments to keep locks strong and balanced.

Promote growth
“For thinning hair, one option is to get scalp treatments done with a dermatologist like Dr. Howard Sobel at Sobel Skin. The PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections utilize growth factors in your own platelets to help regenerate hair growth,” shares master hair colorist at IGK SOHO Stephanie Brown. “For at-home [treatments], I really like FOLIGAIN Triple Action Hair Care System for Women. It uses natural plant extracts to detox, nourish, and hydrate the scalp. The shampoo and conditioner are also very lightweight, so it doesn’t weigh the hair down in the summer.”

The co-founder of IGK Salon Leo Izquierdo relies on hair Botox. “Hair Botox is a conditioning treatment that fills the hair fiber with protein to help it feel and look fuller. The conditioning agents smooth the hair and reduce frizz. It lasts for two to four months and is considered safe for all hair types,” he says.

Deep condition
When we’re in a pinch and can’t make it to the salon, we rely on at-home deep conditioning treatments to eliminate unwanted knots and restore softness to our locks. Founder of The Hair Fuel Laura Sagen’s favorite is grapeseed oil. “It’s a lightweight oil that doesn’t leave hair greasy or heavy and locks in moisture while also creating a coating on the outermost layer of the hair stand,” she says.

For a softening leave-in conditioner that also helps with damage, we love the OUAI Treatment Masque. It’s formulated with artichoke leaf extract to seal hair cuticles and protect hair from future damage.

Get an oxygen boost
When your hair needs a total overhaul, it’s time for the customized Oxilogica treatment at Nunzio Saviano Salon. “Like an oxygen facial for the hair and scalp, this is a customized, four-step rejuvenating treatment that is designed to nourish, repair, and strengthen hair and scalp, eliminate dryness [and] itchiness, and promote hair growth. Your stylist selects the steps and products that are best suited for your hair type and scalp condition and applies them using an oxygen machine for deep penetration,” says award-winning hairstylist Nunzio Saviano.
